We operate on the old CN roadbed. The ties laid 12 years ago were standard gauge. Our rails were laid off center to accomodate a third rail which has yet to occur. We have started to relay using ties appropriate for 2 foot gauge. This allows us to put rails on center which makes for much better track geometry. The long ties set off center have caused the rails to tip slightly due to cyclical freeze and thaw cycles. We would like to replace at least 100 ties a year focusing on bad ties under joints. All work is done by hand due to no mechanical MOW equipment for 2 foot gauge. Many of us have done time on other New England Railroads (Edaville, WW&F, SR&RL, Conway Scenic, Cog, Clarke's, Boothbay, etc.) allowing us to expand our horizons and learn more. So if you ever want to drive a spike or jack a rail, stop by!
