No hydrostatics are not difficult to use and sometimes require less maintenance. You just can't lubricate very much with them. Even if you have a big one like a Nathan 5-feed. You could lubricate a fair amount with it...five things, but you'd have to turn the feed valves way open. Then you'd be refilling it all the time. A few times a day or more.
Nice big mechanical lubricators are a little more handy. Black Hills Central mallet 110 has a 16 feed Edna on it. That thing holds a lot of oil.
