Phil,
It is indeed ironic that your comment "Passenger traffic was always a loser" went by the board in 1961 when the D&RGW decided to take passenger business seriously on the Silverton Branch.
In the years between 1961 and 1979, more money was generated by passenger traffic on the Silverton Branch than all forms of revenue, everywhere on the D&RG/D&RGW NG system back to the beginning of time multiple times over.
If you are going to talk business, then don't forget that the D&RGW was in the narrow gauge business until 1979, and they made plenty of money in the last 16 years, after they started running two trains in 1964.
Most folks like to think that Colorado narrow gauge ended in 1968 when the mainline to Alamosa was abandoned. Or, in 1952, when the RGS went bankrupt for the last time. Or, in 1937 when the C&S mainline was abandoned. That is completely incorrect. In fact, a strong case can be made that by adding D&S revenues, which carried on without pause from the D&RGW have proven that passenger business has in fact been the most powerful source of revenue for the narrow gauge in astronomical percentages.
The last chapter of the history of Colorado Narrow Gauge has not yet been written.
Just my 2 cents, speaking of "business, business, business". It still is.
