The D&S used #497 but were willing to trade it for #482 (which was too far gone for the C&TSRR to restore at that time.) Why would the D&S trade a perfectly good locomotive for one that would require a complete overhaul? Obviously, they saw potential profits in having K-36's on their line as they did it again with #486 (although this time they didn't have to trade a running K-37!) It's my humble opinion that the D&S doesn't really care about the K-37's as they have
four operable K-36's and a K-28 and two more K-28's awaiting rebuild (if necessary.) There is just no economic reason to do anything with them!
The C&TSRR has three K-36's operating with one more coming on line later this year. They have a K-27 that is beloved, a K-36 that is in sad shape but not unsalvageable (and that has incredible historical value to the railroad) and also a couple of K-37's. Which gets restored? Looking at both railroads, it's not the K-37 that is the first (or even second) choice!
I'm going to make a prediction that the #473 will be restored back to running order and that the D&S will finally restore the #476 but that it will not happen until 2009 at the earliest. The C&TSRR will start on the #463 and it will be ready to run again but also not until 2009! I don't believe there will be any funding for restoration of a K-37. Five engines will be all that the C&TSRR will ever have running at one time.
Now, predictions aside, I believe that a trade of a K-36 for a K-28
might be possible! A lot of it would depend upon which engine would be in the trade. How badly does the C&TSRR want a K-28? I know, a pipe dream but still a nice one!
