A man who served as a clerk in the Crested Butte depot told me that only Texaco sold gas there in the 20s and 30s. The CF&I Company Store was the only gas station. They would unload the Texaco tank car into trucks which took it to the storage tanks at the store. If the storage tanks were full, the D&RGW would keep the tank car on a siding near the depot until it was empty. As most cars were not driven in the winter months in the 20s, one tank car could take care of the town's needs all winter. By 1933, the highway was kept open year round (that was the year the D&RGW substituted a bus for the mixed train on the branch). After that, the store sold more gas and it was necessary to send a tank car every few weeks.
