John:
Texaco and CONOCO both had tank cars on the D&RGW and gasoline was distributed all over the narrow gauge. The first car of refined gas from the Farmington refinery in 1925 went to a local distributor in La Jara. I spent time with a man who worked in the Crested Butte depot as a clerk and he said that a Texaco tank car was brought to Crested Butte about twice a month in the 20s and 30s (not that many cars in those days). The highway between Crested Butte and Gunnison was closed in the winter until 1933. People put their cars up on blocks and did not use them during the winter months. The Texaco storage tank was on a spur near the Crested Butte depot and they had two storage tanks near the wye in Gunnison. Not sure where they were on other parts of the narrow gauge, but I know narrow gauge tank cars of gas were unloaded at Espanola and Santa Fe on the Chili Line.
