Me too ,Herb ! I rode the train at Travel Town when I was a wee lad. I was dismayed when the City of L.A. closed down the operation in 1962 .I visited the engine many times over the years and was glad it returned to Hawaii . However ,I heard some distressing news .A new boiler was ordered ,and it was the wrong size ,and would not fit on the frame ! That happened several years ago and since then I understand there has been a lot of head-scratching at Lahaina on how to modify the boiler so it would fit. Maybe Earl can jump in here with more information . Unfortunately this is a mistake that has happened several times before , when the dimensions of a boiler are sent as opposed to the boilerworks using the boiler itself as a template . One success story is the boiler of Kahului #12 ,which was sent to John Braun in Durango as a template . The new boiler fit well ,but from previous posts it is obvious that it needs plenty more work to be a serviceable engine.
