I remember seeing photos of that 3985/3967 trip. I actually like the smoke deflectors on these engines. They are like half-deflectors, as opposed to the 800's which go down further on the front/side.
Here in the midwest we had "Elephant Eared" New York Central engines calling on Cincinnati, where I first saw one of this type. Like Mike said, we were brought up to call them Elephant Ears. The New York Central had them on a lot of the Mohawks(4-8-2's), and the Niagaras(4-8-4)'s. I think the NYC and the UP were the most well-known to have smoke deflectors in the US, although a few others had them as well, such as the Nickel Plate 4-6-4's, D&H Challengers, etc.
The most engines I ever saw with smoke deflectors was in South Africa, where no less than 4 varieties had them. 25 class 4-8-4, 25NC 4-8-4, 15F class 4-8-2, and 23 class 4-8-2. These all had the full ones like NYC and UP 800's.
They reminded me of the UP 800's or NYC Niagaras in appearance. Sounded nice also! Hard to believe I am talking about 1984 as being the good old days, let alone the late 50's!!!
