3985 actually carried three numbers during the weekend commemorating the 1953 trip. She deadheaded down to Denver as 3985. There she was renumbered 3967 for the round trip to Laramie. Early the next morning, preparing for the return to Cheyenne, the crew placed a new number plate on her, 3718 which arguably would have been assigned had she actually been converted to oil during her days of revenue service. All in good fun, the Steam Crew had a great time with it (and, of course, so did the fans!).
Yes, 3985 has again operated with the smoke lifters, however I can't just now recall when. I'll find out and get back about that.
