Ed, I've obviously had too much coffee and am now foolish enough to pick a fight about your comment about a slide to socialism. Any notion that this country (USA) does not have a long history of socialism is a crock of #$%&. The moment government is formed to serve the needs of the people socialism has occurred. When land grants were given to the rr's to benefit the nation as a whole along with a group of greedy capitalists, socialism occurred. Anytime someone on RR Retirement draws more than he or she put in such as someone who retires early on disability might, socialism has occurred, not to mention the fact that the government is administering an individuals retirement in the first place. Going back to the early years of our country when the Louisiana purchase occured and as time past land was given from the public domain to indiviual citizens to settle on, socialism occurred. The question becomes at what level do we expect the government to help the indiviual citizen, not whether or not our country has a socialist element to the function of government as to some degree socialism has always been part of our society call it what you may. I doubt that there are many on this board that would not like to see a fat Federal Grant awarded to their favorite Non-profit rr museum. Sounds like socialism to me.
No particular offense intended Ed it's just happens that I live in a very politically right wing area and sweeping statement that don't hold up to the light of day are all too common.
