Four or five years ago, my wife an I rode the weekly steam-powered excursion from Skagway to Lake Bennett (with Baldwin 2-8-2 No. 73 on the head end). Every mile of that 40-mile run features spectacular scenery and thrilling mountain railroading. I can't wait return and go all the way to Carcross, YT.
Actually, the new Carcross turn will reinstate the service that the WP&Y offered in the 1950's and 1960's, when tourists on CN, CPR and Alaska Cruise Line steamships were offered an option to take a train called the "Carcross Tour Special". The roundtrip fare at that time, including lunch at Lake Bennett, was $21.75. I dare say the WP&Y will charge a lot more for this excursion when they resume service in 2007. However, but the ride will still be worth the ticket price, whatever that may be. The White Pass is a "class act", honoring it's taditions and providing value for money.
