VERY well said and it's exactly what I've mentioned here a time or three. When I first visited Chama in 2003 I was shocked at the apparent walls between the railroad and the town, the Friends and the town, etc.
I made it a point to hit as many shops as I could and buy SOMEthing, and I told every one of them that I was a member of the Friends and making my first visit to Chama and my first work session and that I'd be back, and that I was trying hard to support the locals. Every one of them appeared to genuinely appreciate what I said and offered that they surely wished more did the same.
There are many, many other problems which contribute to the morass of politics connected with the railroad. Those of us who supposedly truly appreciate what that railroad (AND the D&S) is need to spend some local money in support of the cause. And, in my opinion, we need to tell them exactly what we're doing.
I even do it at the grocery store, etc., because word's going to get around, period.
Several years ago a young guy from Phoenix or environs came up and opened a place called "The Village Bean" on main street. He roasted his own coffee and served fabulous breakfasts (in this stomach's opinion). He worked very hard at trying to bring the railroad, the town and the merchants together. I understand this year he's sold and returned south. A great pity.
By the way, any visiting Chama should eat supper at the new restaurant next to the grocery store. EXCELLENT!!
