I went through it at least once, maybe twice. I remember going in 1971, as we had been to Chama, and went to Durango following the old line in the process. At Pagosa Junction(Gato), the store was open, and we went in to get something to drink as I recall. It was a time machine of old army surplus, and other ancient stuff. I kinda remember some gal, who was maybe the daughter of the guy at the time. I think we might have gotten a coke from one of those old coke machines with the turn down handle, and a small bottle(8 ounces maybe). I know we were all surprised at this place in the middle of nowhere.
I am not sure we went inside in 1968, but we were in Gato with my folks as we shot 498 at the tank. We must have gone inside the store, but I just don't remember that too well. I just remember shooting stills out the back door of the truck-camper as we drove down the dusty road next to the railroad from Arboles to Pagosa Junction. All our pictures of course had dust between us and the 498. Boy we were stupid, but then we did have a good time. My brother got one neat 8mm sequence right next to the engine as we were about even with the back of the tender....good rods and cab shot. I have a still around of 498 at the water tank. We left the train there, and headed to Pagosa springs to get the main road to Chama. I think we were told the road did not go all the way through to Dulce, so we went the long way around. So how do folks get into places like Navajo, etc?
