I believe that for the later steam era, at least, the rules were pretty universal. Extra's were to be indicated with white flags by day/ white class lights at night. An extra section following was to be indicated by green flags/ lights. If an engine was backing at the end of a train, it would show red flags/marker lights. I don't believe that the class lamps were ever used as markers, however.
