It was interesting how the locomotive was operated. There was no moving the Johnson Bar. It was left in the same notch.
The injector was operated while waiting for the highball. The water gauge appeared low but when the train started up the 3.96 percent grade by the enginehouse the gauge filled to near the top. Since all the water rushed to the back of the boiler a too-full boiler on the lowlands would cause the engine to prime going up the grade.
At the top about a 20-second blast on the injector made sure the crown sheet was covered going downhill.
