You of all people should know that it wasn't until the depression that "grime" became the norm. Back in the day the crews were PROUD of their engine and kept them as neat and clean as possible. And yes, the railroads DID run bunting and even HUGE signs draped all over the engines on special occasions.
As for coal the smoke that some foamers are so fond of, that was a sign of a bad fireman. An efficiently run engine produces just a slight haze at the stack, with the occasional puff as fuel is added.
Remember, just because something doesn't fit YOUR particular myopic world view doesn't mean it isn't "histically" (hysterically?) correct. TRY to be happy that the da#&ed things aren't still sitting rusting away
