White is for extra trains, and green is for advance sections of regular trains. Regular trains running without sections, and the last section of a regular grain in sections showed "no signals" (no flags and class lights unlit). Basically, if you saw green you knew there was more to come.
What I can't tell you is the lens arrangement in the class lamps used on steam engines or how they changed color, because I only did it on diesels where we simply changed the lens in a round hole in the front hood.
Class lamps should not be confused with marker lamps.
