James,
There is a brief bit of history and several photos on the steel steam yacht designed by Ephraim Shay in Michael Koch's book "The Shay Locomotive, Titan of the Timber". According to Koch it set some speed records but had a tendency to point her nose under at high speeds. Reportedly she was capable of speeds approaching 20 knots.
Even though initially a lumberman, he became facinated with steel and also designed and built a steel sided house, which may still be in use. Shay was an inventor with several patents.
Koch's book has several photos of Shay's original locomotives and narrow gauge railroad.
