To my mind you're EXACTLY right, EC, and I am simply SO thankful the C&TS has survived.
Operating that railroad under the unusual ownership/management situation is no easy task, at any level. Thanks to all, from the states of Colorado and New Mexico through the Commission to the operator, the crews and other employees and the Friends. I don't care if it isn't "perfect", whatever the heck THAT might mean.
Whenever we get down about the way things are, and how they might (just MIGHT, mind you) be better if the railroad were privately owned or even if it was owned by just one of the two states, please be absolutely sure to keep in mind that it is in fact the economic impact the railroad has on the two counties through which it operates which is REALLY the factor ensuring its survival to date.
So, when you travel to ride, photo, record, work on or otherwise enjoy the C&TS, spend some good money with the local merchants. Don't be like far, far too many of the tourists who drive into the parking lots and either get on the train or bus, take their ride and then ultimately return to their cars and leave the area. (had to throw that part in)
