An interesting, if long-winded, exhortation of what a scab meant to the union man can be found at [london.sonoma.edu]
and it is from the author Jack London. I think scab is generally referred to as a person who workrd in the place of a striking union person, not necessarily a non-union gainfully employeed person. Because most of us working today would be labeled scabs under this set of definitions and that's not the case.
