The reason Henry Ford switched to black on the Model T after about 1914 was that no other paint of the time dried fast enough for his production line. Fast drying was probably also desirable for the railroads, but you are probably right in that it was the cheapest paint color as well as being easiest to maintain because it didn't show dirt as much as other colors.
