no one has mentioned yet that the fancy color schemes were used mostly in the wood burning era.
When coal came in it left a lot more soot and dust around than wood ever did.
By the way, I saw the 1875 Jupitor at the Smithsonian last week and she sure is a smart looking example of narrow gauge engineering!
