I admit I took to wearing the "gauntlets" ,following Earl's lead .I liked wearing a bandanna .If properly applied(I tied mine square as per old-time rails'method) it kept hot cinders from running down the neck and sizzling skin all the way south to the tool box . I preferred Big Smith Overalls as their clasps were heavy duty and the sturdy denim was good for up to three seasons . They are still made but getting harder to get . I liked the striped shirts but preferred to use my own polyester shirts in hot weather .
Shoes were always Redwings ,greased with mink oil to make them water-resistant . I always wore clean overalls and shirt .One fellow said I looked "too neat" but I pointed out that I was proud of a job I worked very hard for and wanted my appearance to reflect that . For the most part ,that was how the old timers felt about it as well .
