Dennis,
Unless I am mistaken, on the D&RGW the diamonds were painted green, and would be visible to the train from either direction straight.
The round target would be painted either red or yellow (if there was a spring in use).
It is also my understanding that high stands were to be used on the main as a "general" rule, but I'm sure there were exceptions.
