Ospreys (fish hawks) are not uncommon in the Northeast. If you ride Amtrak between New York and Boston you can see man-made osprey nesting platforms as you travel along the Connecticut coast east of New Haven.
I hadn't realized that ospreys are found in New Mexico and Colorado, but a map in the Kaufman Guide: Birds of North America indeed shows them there. It looks as if Chama is close to the eastern edge of their territory.
