Kevin, One additional thing we do at the end of season is to blow out the flues. We have an air nozzle under pressure which a member takes into the firebox and with the smokebox door open, inserts the nozzle into each tube, one at a time, and blows out the loose carbon. The reason is to prevent the loose carbon from absorbing moisture during the winter months, which will promote rust in the tubes. We also of course drain the boiler and tender, as well as remove any pipe fittings that can trap water so they cannot freeze and burst.
