Typically, the tools you have on board no a coal fired engine are the coal scoop and a hook. The hook is just a long rigid steel rod with a short 90 degree bend in the end. That's what you'd use to "stir up" the fire, break clinker, and most likely you'd also use it for "sparking" mentioned above.
