I wouldn't write the 19 off. A lot of the posts here seem to assume the situation is a lot worse than it is. The work on the two diesel prime movers seems to have them running pretty well. The wiring seems okay. Hopefully what we will find is the problem are some fried and abused traction motors that simply didn't get enough attention at the shop, and maybe some work on an aux gen. Until the 487 came in to Antonito lame at the end of the season, and early snow blocked the line so that the 19 was the only other engine at Antonito, the 19 was not a high priority. And we tried to fix it on the cheap without an electrician. Keep in mind that this whole season was an exercise in too much to do, too little time and money. My guess is the 19 will be running fairly well relatively soon.
On the other hand, I agree it is not really a road engine, especially given our grades and miles. I think Earl mentioned the lack of transition makes for a slow trip. We would love to get one of the ex-steel mill 90 tonners that are available, but at an asking price of $125,000 it requires money we don't have. The price is probably negotiable, but it's tough to negotiate without cash. And add in transporation and the inevitable repairs. Maybe in a couple of years, or if someone wants to buy one and lease it too us.
