The 3000 series box cars were built for the D&RG in 1904 by American Car & Foundry. There were 750 cars, nos. 3000 - 3749. The D&RGW rebuilt these cars in 1926 into the configuration most people are familiar with - the cars in service at the end of narrow gauge operations by the D&RGW. The rebuilding of narrow gauge freight cars was largely done at Alamosa.
