As most of you have figured out by now, the C&TS knows a lot more about fixing steam engines than diesels. I guess the good news is that helps show what a historically accurate operating steam museum we are.
We recently heard a rumor from a reputable source that the U. S. Government (Army?) still had in moth balls, maybe in Utah, some dual gauge units, possibly the same type that tested on the DRGW back in the late 50's. I'm wondering if there is any truth to that, and of course the next question would be if the Commission could get their hands on one. Any one have any facts?
We're not at all ready to give up on the 19 (too much history behind it), and outside help is being sought as I write this. But a higher horsepower unit would be a handy addition to the fleet for a whole bunch of work train applications. On the other hand, I am also aware that the Army unit was not an unmitigated success when it was on the DRGW.
