Fishing and the San Juan

January 25, 2006 11:47AM
Bob's comment about getting on and off at Garfield Monument reminded me of another story. Apparently riding the San Juan to go fishing was not unusual. A friend I worked with at SP had a grandfather or uncle who worked in the car shop at Alamosa. He remembers as a kid they would take the westbound San Juan up to Los Pinos in the morning, go fishing around Los Pinos, and then catch the eastbound home in the afternoon. So the fisherman's trail that Bob mentioned was probably exactly that, but once the San Juan was gone it probably disappearred from lack of use.
