The photo quality in the re-print editions (1978 and later) may be very slightly lower than the original, but not significant. The reprints do have an additional chapter with a few more photos. One advantage of the softcover is that the maps were reduced and bound into the book. If you buy a hardcover, make sure all the maps are still in the map pocket.
