Use your imagination. I'm sure even in California you have happened on a spot which may be only barely hidden from view that some dolt has used to "mark" his territory by pissing all over everything.
The first time I was in Chama, Summer of 1968, the only equipment on the rails there was Rotary OM. The door was ajar on the right side, and when I stepped in there the outhouse smell was overpowering. Someone had clearly dumped more than ashes in there on more than one occasion.
It is a sad commentary on an age old human condition that what one man views as sacrosanct, another views merely as a target to piss on. Or in, as the case may be.
