You're absolutely right. If you look at the photos on Multipower internationals site carefully, you will see the base does not sit flat. That to me means the steam would turn and go out and miss the bell completely and the chimes that are over it. With the whistle they have pictured, you'd probably only really hear 3 or 4 of the notes.
Thats like the flat top 6-chime in Chama that was on the 487 in 2003 and on 484 for years. The way it is now, you can't hear the highest note, and one of the others sounds just like a squeek and thats it. So its basically just a 4 note at the moment. It was working better at the beginning of the 2004 season. I asked Carlos if they did anything to it and he said no, all they did was take it off and put it back on. He had noticed a change also. So either something was dropped on it and dented it just the right way to actually help it, or just change in temperatures.
I'll post a picture for you of my dads Star Brass 5-chime later this evening. Those are my favorite whistles ever. They served their purpose very well (the smallest chime is only 2 3/4" deep) because they have a very shrill sound, but at the same time have an extremely pleasant sound. You don't have to blow it very hard to REALLY hear it.
