Re: loco location

Most of the large K's had the extra flag storage box on the firemans side of the smokebox up until the end of passenger operations in 1951. The tool boxes that they had were gradually removed for some reason I'm not sure of. The large box on the top of the cab roof was for a fire hose and was usually put on the Durango yard switcher. You can sometimes tell the location a loco was based by how much extra silver was put on as shop crews in Salida and Gunnison liked to add silver to loco's based out of there--like the 474 as an example when it was based out of Gunnison. Hope this helps some.
