I would also like to know about the third lamp on the center of the cupola. I'm not sure how wide of practice it was, but some railroads used a device known as a stecil box, centered inside of the cupola. It had a lamp that shined through changeable sheets with cutout numbers and letters that indicated the train number, whether running extra, etc. in an illuminated display in order to inform other trains or lineside operators.
