The Durango Herald today has an interesting story on the continuing smoke situation in Durango.
A thought on the double headers mentioned is that the second engine could could run light to Hermosa and be added to the train at Hermosa, and if memory serves me correctly, the second engine returns light to Durango, so I'm a little confused by those comments in this article.
Silverton seems destined to be the ash pit end of the railroad--why not originate all the trains here and move engine house and shops here? The D&S has 20 acres of undeveloped depot grounds and this would solve the Durango smoke problem and provide a dramatic increase in lunch business for the restaurants around the Durango depot. Some of them would have to shift into high gear compared to their laid back serving style currently in practice. Silverton still burns a lot of coal to heat buildings, so a few more smoke stacks shouldn't be a problem, and Durango can continue on becoming the city it never was.
