The former SAR civil eigineer and railfan who helped start the Alfred County is Charlie Louis. With Alan Jorgensen, Lewis authored books like "The Great Steam Trek" and "Steam in Africa". They are classics with incredible photography of the era when the former SAR (in Afrikaans, the SAS) was a bastion of steam. It isn't widely known, but there is a former SAR 2-foot Garratt on Bob Bucher's private line on his ranch near Houston, Texas (along with a former SAR 2-foot 2-8-2. Bucher calls the line the Hempstead & Northern and occasionally fires up his locomotives and operates them for friends.
