One summer many years ago when I lived in the shadow of Coit Tower and walked to work at SP along the waterfront, I remember being delighted to find the remnants of three rail track buried in the pavement in various places. Later on I saw a wonderful map that showed the various ownership of tracks in that area (back when they had LOTS of tracks)...I remember some crossbucks were lettered SP, some ATSF and so on.
The bad news is I have no recollection of who had the map....probably David Myrick (who also lived in the shadow of Coit Tower at the time). Even if I can find the map, it probably does not specifically answer a very interesting question. But it might provide some clues since presumably a lot of "NWP" trackage might have originally been ng. or dual gauge. I will try to find this and report back. I wonder if any of the histories of the ng. lines might have some maps.
