One reason the tour group companies like the D&S is that most of their people ride one way--Durango to Silverton, and the bus picks them up in Silverton and they continue on to the next place. Some tours will have lunch here, then move on, like Tauck Tours, or some go on to Ouray for lunch. Many of these tours have come from Mesa Verde the day before and Durango offers a wide choice of motel/hotel rooms and numerous restaurants. Chama is limited in these areas and thus doesn't fit in too well with see the West in 6 days that the tour companies like to sell. It is a matter of facilities and convenience to move people in and out and not have to spend a full day riding a train, regrettable as that may be to those of us who go to great lengths to see and ride trains.
