Brian ,I picked up the story from Richardson ,I think .When the RGS was salvaged in 1953 the SP inquired about #0404 . The SP caboose ,#0401 ,was worn out and a replacement was needed .Apparently the clerestory of this short old combine was collapsing . When they found out it had full-size couplers ,they opted for rebuilding #0401 ,removing the clerestory . Like the Grande ,the SP was reluctant to put any money into an operation they felt they would soon be rid of any way . Why they purchased the diesel from GE in 1954 escapes me .Incidentally the Grande looked in to dieselizing the narrow gauge but they projected that abandonement was just around the corner .First they thought they could close the Alamosa-Farmington line in 1954 ,then 1960 . It is an accident of history that it lasted till 1968 ,100% steam .
Another conundrum ... Was SP #9 the last serviceable steam engine on the system ? It was backup to the GE unit at Owenyo till the 1960 abandonement. The last official steam run on the SP system was out of Douglas ,Arizona in January 1959 ,with a 2-8-0 going south to the smelter in Nacozari,Sonora .. I think the last time SPng#9 was used was in 1958 .
