Greg and Al are right, too many people spoil the experience but you can't charge $500 - $600 for a one day steam trip. Goodheart did it on the 3751 Grand Canyon trip and sold out, because we all knew it was a once in a lifetime deal. Most of the people who would pay for a C&TS charter have already done it two or three times before and won't pay a scarcity premium.
Also, there is a quality factor. I would have to think long and hard about spending the money to fly to Colorado, rent a car, spend several nights in a motel and on top of that pay $500 - $1000 for the charter. I'd do it for a trip organized by John Craft, or Greg Scholl, or Dave Gross, because I know I would get my money's worth. It's unlikely I would do it for anyone else, unless they came very highly recommended by people I trust.
I won't go into the Commission's pricing, because the C&TS has got to be an expensive RR to operate, but a number of other tourist roads charge under $5,000 for a full day. $10,000 for one engine and train is mainline pricing and is probably a bit high for the C&TS. The second (and third) engine(s) ought to cost about half that.
I don't think you will see any more Craft type trips on the C&TS, unless the Commission decides to fine tune their pricing structure. Even then, I think it's a shrinking market.
