The highest point on the D&RGW was the Ibex branch on a spur to the Garbutt mine. The Ibex branch was narrow gauge until 1917 and abandoned in 1944. The ties of the spur to Garbutt mine are still there and it is strange to stand there as it is just the end of a mine spur, yet the highest point on the D&RGW. A 1944 issus of the D&RGW had an article about the branch being abandoned and said that the highest point on the D&RGW was now at Marshall Pass. Same issue mentioned that famous writer Ernie Pyle had ridden a freight over Marshall Pass to Gunnison...didn't say why he was there and what he did next...Gunnison was a famous fishing spot (still is) and Bob Hope used to go fishing there often.
