A little more info on the CRRM "Gramps" tank car, Yes, the Gramps car was leased by Lafayette Hughes known as Gramps and lettered so his grandchildren would know who's it was. The CRRM car (had two numbers) originally came from the used railroad car dealer in Estrella, CO. W#hen the Sundown and Southern got it, it had the ends and dome cut off/out and was going to be used as a culvert. The S&S welded in 2 replacement ends and obtained another dome. The CRRM lined up the dome and tack welded it on. Two replacement ends were formed/rolled by a Texas company that are virtually identical to the originals. One end has been installed. It looks like it is riveted on just like the originals. A complete brake system has been fabricated and mostly installed. The correct couplers were obtained (two different types)New ladders/grabs have been built. Spring loaded centering units have been installed on the trucks. It is slowly being put back together correctly. The CRRM is fortunate to have more records than you ever could want on these cars. When the car is finished, it will out do the ex GLRR Gramps car that was used to store oil on the Loop, and is currently stored at the Museum. A note of interest, I understand these UTLX cars were originally built standard gauge. If you are interested in a Gramps car restoration, you need to come by the Museum to appreciate the time, effort, and historically correct work done to this car. The numbers match and I'm told it has the original air in the tank.
