It wasn't built as a visitor's center but was originally the office-headqaurters-museum for the Narrow Gauge Motel on the highway south of town. This was the forerunner of the Colorado Railroad Museum and was run by Bob Richardson and Carl Helfin. And yes, it was modeled after an RGS depot--can't remember which one right now. It was moved into town after the motel closed and long after Bob Richardson moved most of the collection to Golden.
