Jack,
I worked for the D&S for 3 years and have been with the Georgetown Loop for 6 years. During the season, both places are typically 10 hour days.
The D&S was in the process of changing ownership when I worked there, and gets better every year with their new ownership. Durango is a fantastic place to live, but has a little higher price of living than most places. I would go back if I could retire too.
The Georgetown Loop is one of the few places where you can wear just about every job hat in one day. The shop has performed some amazing restorations, and is in the middle of another steam engine restoration (#44). Two things about Georgetown ... First, the crew there can't be beat. They know what they're doing, and they are easy to get along with. Secondly, the GLR could use another person or more. There's plenty of small mountain towns about, and Denver is an hour away if you get to missing the big city.
Good luck.
