I hiked into rock tunnel starting at Osier. I had chased the train up from Chama to Cumbres on that day and then decided to drive to Osier. I think that one of the trains was there when I arrived and the other pulled in shortly after. I then hoofed it back into rock tunnel. I barely had enough time to set up my equipment before the train arrived. I wasn't really keeping track of time but it would have been the time for the lunch break plus a few minutes for the train to travel the approx 3 miles. It would be better to get there in the morning to catch it westbound and then wait for it to return.
The goose shots were taken fairly close to Osier. Walking the grade it is approx 3/4 mile from the dining hall. You could drive down the rough road that goes behind the dining hall to get there. But then you have to hike uphill to the grade from the road to get to that spot. Not easy hiking at that altitude for a desert rat like myself. With a good zoom you might get some decent shots from the road. If the stream is low you could cross on the road and head down the canyon quite a ways. I saw someone do this while I was there but it looked like he was sliding a bit. He had one of those rigs that is jacked up 3 feet or so.
BTW, nice shot of the Garratt
