Having just ridden both the C&T and the D&S I can say that both trips are fantastic. C&T runs along the sides of the canyons near the top with great valley views, generally downward. D&S runs along the Animas River with great mountain views, generally upward. C&T goes through rugged but not high mountains. D&S passes in the shadow of many 14'ers.
Each route is a fantastic remnant of the D&RGW's narrow gauge San Juan Extension. The C&T is a segment of the former Alamosa - Durango main line. The D&S is the former Silverton Branch. From an historic perspective, each line is totally different in the types and classifications of service which ran there and these differences contribute to the operation and characteristics of the roads today.
I hear lots of talk about C&T being "a more authentic experience." Hogswallop. The Silverton Branch of the D&RGW provided commerce in and out of the town of Silverton and a connection to this mining camp from the outside world. Additionally it provided a way for sportsmen to access the canyon for hunting, fishing and hiking. The D&S still does all of that today. The Alamosa to Durango mainline provided freight service to the branches out of Durango and passenger service via the
San Juan to and from Durango. The C&T no longer approaches this service. I have ridden the Cumbres and Toltec over 45 times and the Durango and Silverton over 20 times. If anything, I have always found the Silverton to be more authentic to its original task.
I found each line to be run in all ways like a genuine railroad with all the operational trimmings from Rule 99 flagging to the hanging of markers. The employees of both railroads went out of their way to be friendly and accomodating. I can't wait to go ride with both of them again.
And say listen, if you are going to be in the area you just have to go ride behind SL&RG (former SP) 2-6-0 number 1744 over La Veta Pass! That is one dynamite train ride with incredible scenery and great equipment. I rode the line twice, once behind diesel and the other behind 1744 and chased the 1744 for a day. What an awesome experience. It is also one of the best values for the dollar in steam train rides in the country. 1744 is a real trooper and handles her four car streamlined train with grace and power. Don't miss it!
