The D&S is a more non-railfan friendly place for the rest of the family if they are not railfans.

Both are excellent rides, but very different. My family grumped about Chama. Loved Durango. Everyone liked both trips, although the wife was not keen on the Antonito end of the trip. I guess I was pushing it with two train trips on one family vacation. The next vacation had no trains - wife reminded me about the eastern end of the C&TS and she was NOT riding another train on that vacation.

The price one has to pay sometimes.

Ride both if you can. Take the roundhouse tour at the D&S. Worth the price they charge. Lot's of stuff to look at in the Durango yard and it's the only way you can really get back there to walk around.

The Chama yard is open to visitors and the employees are friendly as are all the D&S employees I talked to. From my experience with both railroads, the employees that my kids and I talked to were very proud of their respective railroads and if they had the time, were happy to talk to you about their railroad. If they did not like their jobs, they were good actors.
