A few years back I bought at 16mm film collection and some has been released on video such as our NP and new Canadian stuff. Anyway there was a reel on South Africa from about 1974, which included a fair amount of Garratts including doubleheading with a regular engine...I think it might be Sir Lowry's pass. There was also a few feet of the maroon garratts at probably Niarobi, and a shot of some animals on a train of all things. Those Garratts(59th), were I believe the largest in Africa.
Your comment about not visiting Rhodesia(not Zimbabwe just yet in 1976) was interesting. Some might need to know there was a civil war going on then. In 1977 on our plane flight back from South Africa to London we sat in front of a white guy who was going home for awhile. He was a mercenary!!! Sort of puts all this railfan stuff in perspective doesn't it!!!!!
